Top 5 for De La Torre Despite Mechanical Gremlins

The fifth round of the Porsche Carrera Cup North America Championship took place at Road America over the weekend.

After a successful test at the Elkhart Lake circuit two weeks before Elias De La Torre IV was hopeful that he could put the two days of testing to good use. Elias did not disappoint putting the #4 HCB Yachts JDX Racing Porsche onto P7 in qualifying for race 1.

Race one took place on Saturday with Elias making a good start and a scrappy first lap from the leading pack saw Elias jump into P6 at the end of the first lap. On lap 2 Elias was attacking the #64 who was now holding Elias up, but a few laps later a wheel on the grass at turn 7 caused by the start of a mechanical issue lost him a small amount of time until the full course yellow was shown on lap 8 neutralising the race. The race resumed on lap 11 with 12 minutes remaining and Elias wasted no time jumping into P5 at the restart, later in the lap he briefly moved into P4 before being nudged back to P5 by the end of the lap. For the remaining laps Elias was trying to find a way past the #78 whilst dealing with some issues on the car but time ran out and he crossed the line in P5 equalling his best finish in the series.

For race two on Sunday Elias lined up in P10 and another great first lap saw him jump up to P6 but at the end of the lap the full course yellow was shown neutralising the race. The race restarted on lap 3 and Elias passed the #2 putting him into P5 and into a three-car battle. Unfortunately, the car issues from yesterday’s race started to return and Elias was having to manage locking rear brakes, a wheel on the grass at turn three dropped him to P10. On lap 14 he passed the #37 into P9 but the mechanical issues prevented him from moving further up the field.

The next round of the Porsche Carrera Cup North America is at Indianapolis in September.
